It is a remake of the 1936 Frank Capra film Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, which in turn is based on the 1935 short story Opera Hat by Clarence Budington Kelland. Mr Deeds won a Kids' Choice Award for Favourite Movie Actor (Sandler). Audiences polled by Cinema Score gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale. The film was a major financial success with gross Box office worldwide sales of US$171,269,537.
