Everest (2015) Film Review

This film reviewer has a particular interest in Mt. Everest as he considers it to be one of the last remote frontiers. As far as the movie goes I thought it was a winner. It is not over produced and the use of 3D is well done. The 3D effects give you a real feeling of the landscape the story is set in. Often 3D films are all about having ‘ objects coming at you and in your face’ so to speak but not so in this case. In fact it was so well done I think for marketing purposes the distributor could have used a tag line relating to the 3D effect of the scenery.

If you are familiar with this mis-adventure and have read Michael Groom's (he was a guide who was involved in the disaster) book 'Sheer Will' (which I recommend) you will be happy to know the key aspects of the story were dealt with well. i.e. the overcrowding of the mountain, the commercial aspect of mountaineering guiding and the responsibilities that come with it, turn-around times and the almost impossible aspect of man v’s nature on the mountain. The characters of Rob Hall played by Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) Scott Fisher Jake Gyllenhaal (Southpaw) Doug Hanson John Hawkes (Lincoln) and Beck Weathers Josh Brolin (Labor Day) were well represented by this stella cast. I have read Beck Weathers book – ‘Left For Dead’ - and it is worth a read. This is a far better production than the 1997 made for TV effort ‘Into Thin Air – Death On Everest’ which is littered with inaccuracies. There are many reasons to see this movie, for me it was hoping that Hollywood had not botched it and I can happily say they have not.
