The Woodlanders live in the tiny village community of Little Hintock, part of a larger estate owned by a lonely widow, Mrs. Charmond. For generations they have eked out an existence, employed in hurdle-weaving, fruit-tree grafting, cidermaking, their lives linked to the rhythm of the seasons. They are simple people, their culture nurtured by the woodland and their commitment to it.
