A film’s genre has widely been seen as stemming
from the three-way relationship between the film-makers, the audience and the
text itself. While much has been written elsewhere about the audience and the
text of ‘Strictly Ballroom’, in this article Garry Gillard explores the
intentions of the makers of ‘Strictly Ballroom’, drawing on material in the
audio commentary on the DVD and positioning it as the first in Baz Lurmann’s now
